Stone Harbor Resort | Megan and Waldo's Wedding
Megan and Waldo first met at Poh’s Pub in Sturgeon Bay. Perhaps the pairing was unlikely with Waldo being a South African immigrant and Megan a home-grown Midwesterner, or maybe it was certain with life inexplicably bringing them to the same distant bar at the same distant time. Either way, their story began when Waldo found a $5 bill on the ground and offered to buy Megan a drink.
Fast forward a few years and their wedding was in the same town where they met. We spent nine hours together that day, and one of the most memorable moments came when we were creating wedding party photographs at Crossroads at Big Creek. It was a cold afternoon for mid-October, and I was happy to be wearing a jacket and gloves; the bridesmaids in sleeveless dresses weren’t as lucky, so they stayed in the trolley while we worked with the groomsmen.
I photograph a large variety of wedding parties with some large, some small, some up for anything, and some reserved: this one was large and full of energy, and I wanted a photograph to match.
“Hey guys, what are your thoughts on throwing Waldo in the air?” I watched as their pupils doubled in size; the idea was an immediate hit.
“Ok, the throwing part might be the most fun, but the catching part is most important,” I explained as I walked them through how we were going to do it safely. Once everyone knew the plan, we picked Waldo up and counted together.
One… Two… Three… THROW!
Up Waldo went, and down he came landing safely back in his groomsmen’s arms. All-in-all it was very successful, and I felt comfortable doing one more take.
One… Two… Three… THROW!
Again Waldo went up, then up a little more, and then up even more; I have never seen a grown man get launched so high in my entire life!
At this point you might be thinking that Waldo is either still flying through space or that the groomsmen dropped him in a catastrophic disaster, but rest assured that he eventually came down with a perfect landing. Once back on solid ground, we took the trolley to Poh’s and brought our story full circle.
